The Budgerigars are coming
The much loved Budgerigar is one of Australia’s favourite birds. Many millions are kept as pets in Australia and in many other countries of the world. One of the most amazing wildlife scenes in Australia is to see a large flock of hundreds and even thousands of Budgerigars. I’ve only even witnessed this on one occasion; it’s marked in my memory as one of the special birding moments.
Over the last week or so there have been numerous reports of these beautiful birds moving into the southern parts of Australia, including close to my home here in Murray Bridge. I’ll have to keep a special lookout for any that come our way.

They are pretty birds and you have some nice photos. I have seen pictures recently of the large flocks in Australia, it was an amazing sight.
Hi there Eileen,
Welcome to my blog about Australian birds.
I saw the photos of the large flocks of budgies too. Absolutely amazing when seen in huge flocks like that.
My budgie, Magnús is here right now looking at your great photos here in Iceland.
He’s an amazing character. More like a puppy than a bird; and he’s never locked in his cage except overnight.
Thanks for the great photos!
Hi there Alex,
Iceland? This blog certainly gets around! That’s great.
I can just picture Magnus looking at the computer. LOL.
It would be great seeing a large flock in my paddock in Murray Bridge 😀 One of the dreams…Although I do have 8 budgies that help keep my mind focused.
Hi Daniel,
We once had four wild budgies land in our garden on the edge of Murray Bridge. They stayed for about five minutes. I agree – I’d love to have a small flock around all the time.
I’ve also seen a small flock near Swan Reach. On that occasion about 40 flew across in front of our car like green and yellow darts. Magnificent.
