Oh No – I forgot my blog’s birthday
I have been so busy with my studies at university in recent weeks that I completely forgot to celebrate this blog’s THIRD BIRTHDAY. (Sings merrily to himself. No one joins in. Looks around – no one else in the room. BIG SIGH)
This blog started on the 3rd September 2005.
It has been an interesting journey with many friends visiting on a regular basis. Many people have commented and there have been some interesting debates.
My special thanks to Sim’ my son who keeps it all ticking over nicely in the technological sense.
Just to celebrate, here is one of my favourite bird photos.
Rankins Springs Birds of the Bush festival
Rankins Springs is holding their annual Birds of the Bush festival next weekend. This delightful little community is situated in the mid-western area of New South Wales.
Rankins Springs is approximately 574 km from Sydney, 353 km from Canberra, 856 km from Adelaide and 519 km from Melbourne. It is located between West Wyalong and Hay on the Mid Western Highway in the Riverina.
I have driven through this area quite a number of times, often stopping for a meal or refreshments on our way somewhere else. It is about time I planned to actually stay there for a few days because the birding is very good.
For more information about this special event click here.
This photo was taken several years ago when we passed through the town on our way further east. We had lunch in a little park in the main street. Several Red Rumped Parrots were drinking from this pond. They are hard to see because this was before I had my good digital camera with its zoom lens. Click on the image to enlarge.
Foul accident on the freeway
One morning last week I was travelling on the South Eastern Freeway on my way to university in Adelaide. As I was passing Mt Barker I passed what appeared to be a dead chook on the side of the left hand lane.
I guess it was a foul way for a fowl to leave us. Someone in a nearby house must have missed their egg for breakfast that morning.
Sadly, on the way home on the same day there was a dead kangaroo on the side of the freeway almost opposite where the chicken had died. I suspect that there may be a connection between the two deaths, and foul play may be the culprit. This o-pinion could be me jumping to conclusions, however, for I have been known for my feather-brained thinking on many occasions.
I’m still here
Hi there everyone – I’m still here, even if I haven’t posted in a while. I’ve been very busy with my studies at university, then I was away for a few days and most frustrating of all – I’ve had massive computer problems over recent weeks. I hope to get this all sorted out in the next few days and then get back to posting a few bird observations before getting back into the studies again for semester 2.
Welcome to members of the Mannum Garden Club
Yesterday I had the privilege and delight to be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Mannum Garden Club. If you are visiting my blog as a result of that meeting – welcome. Mannum is a farming centre and tourist town on the River Murray about half an hour’s drive from my home in Murray Bridge, South Australia.
During my presentation I talked about the common birds of the Mannum district. I showed many photos of these birds, many of which have appeared on this blog and are in the photo gallery.
Several of the people present asked help with identification of a raptor feeding on the oval nearby. Several Black Kites were on the grass feeding on what I presume was grasshoppers. Later as I drove past the oval again on my way home, I noticed about 60 Black Kites feeding on the oval.
I think I mentioned this before: if anyone reading this blog would like me as a guest speaker about birds, I’d be more than happy to arrange a time providing it is not too far from my home in Murray Bridge – say up to an hour or two travel time. It would be best to use my contact form here to get in touch with me. I will even fly interstate if the ticket is provided!!
