Wedge-tailed Eagles
On a recent trip to Adelaide I was delighted to see two Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring high over the freeway near Mt Barker. I have driven this route many hundreds of times over the last twenty five years but this is the first time I’ve seen this species while using the freeway.
This sighting was just north of the golf course and the Laratinga Wetlands area on the eastern edge of town. It is good to see that this species is surviving in an area of the Mt Lofty Ranges that is rapidly becoming swallowed by suburbia. Several thousand houses have been built in this area over the last decade.
I didn’t have my camera with me at the time. Moreover, I couldn’t legally stop at that point anyway. Instead I have included a photo of a captive Wedge-tailed Eagle taken by my son Sim’ at Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria.

What an impressive proud bird here mm what a vision of absolute pride, power and majesty, I’m amazed at the range of colours in this spieces of eagle.

Thanks for visiting Shane – and for leaving a comment. The Wedge Tail Eagle would have to be one of the most magnificent eagles found anywhere.
My daughter had a close encounter with a wedgie at her fathers farm in Glenquarry, NSW, She was riding her horse when she came upon one sitting on the ground high up on Sugarloaf hill. They both got a huge surprise. I don’t think the eagle flew off as it was probably used to horses and didn’t expect to see a human on board. I told her that it was something she would remember all her life, and she agreed.
Some years ago now our son was working at Roxby Downs while doing work experience during his uni days. On his way back one day he saw several WT Eagles sitting on dead kangaroos on the road. He pulled up to have a look. The eagle looked at him straight in the eye – its eyes were level with him in the car. Spooked him so much that he drove off in a hurry.
eagles are vrey cool birds i live on a farm and i have seen the big nest they build i love going up to the padock where they are and watch them sore in the sky

I am a big eagle fan and being from Australia myself the Wedge-tailed eagle is my favourite of all. I am going to Taronga zoo this weekend to see the bird show which I believe has a Wedge-tail in it, unfortunately they dont do encounters with them, they only have an owl that you can ‘hold’. I came across you site whilst searching for places that do have encounters.
